A specially developed virus called JX-594 is a new cancer combating virus working on search and destroy principle. To develop a virus, a strain of vaccinia virus was used with modifications – a gene encoding a protein called GM-CSF was added to detect cancer cells, and a gene transcribing beta-galactosidase as a marker to localize virus.

The study was conducted on 23 patients with metastases. Virus replicated in tumors only and not in the health tissue which is promising. In 6 from 8 patients, which got the highest doses, the tumor became smaller or at least stable. This treatment is developed by California company Jennerex Inc.
