Once the Aral Sea was the fourth largest salt lake in the world. But, since 60-ies in the region have begun a variety of peculiar to the Soviet Union, the projects on irrigation, which left the Aral Sea without water sources. Since then, the sea declined steadily and in 2004 he stayed on for only 25% of the area. And the area where previously there was water, now turned into a desert with abandoned ships.
